- Between 6:00 and 7:00 pm, mix the preparation according to the instructions on the bottle. Begin drinking solution as directed: 8 ounces every 10 to 15 minutes until you have drunk 8 glasses. It may help to use a straw. You are done drinking for the night. Refrigerate the remaining solution for tomorrow. You may have clear liquids again until you go to bed. Please do not have any solid food after you start drinking the prep. (clear liquids include, clear juices, Gatorade, Jell-O, bouillon, coffee or tea without milk – you may have sugar – No liquids with purple or red dye, please) You will continue to have liquid bowel movements throughout the evening. To assure a high quality exam, you should consume the entire prep.
5-6 Hours Prior to Scheduled Arrival Time for the Exam
Begin drinking the second half of the solution: 8 ounces every 10 to 15 minutes until you have finished the bottle (8 glasses). You may continue to have clear liquids up until 4 hours prior to your arrival time. YOU MUST STOP DRINKING ANYTHING BY MOUTH BEYOND THIS TIME. THIS INCLUDES HARD CANDY, BREATH MINTS, GUM, AND SMOKING. YOUR PROCEDURE MAY BE DELAYED OR CANCELLED IF THIS IS NOT FOLLOWED.
The better these instructions are followed, the better the bowel prep works. The quality of the bowel prep dictates how well your physician is able to do your procedure and find and remove small lesions and polyps to prevent colon cancer. This is the most important way to help you get a quality exam. You may also view this video regarding bowel preps.
